British Transport Police (BTP) are recruiting for x2 permanent Occupational Health Practice Nurses. Both roles are part-time, 18.5 hours per week. One role will be based in Manchester OR Leeds and the other will be based in London. The role is paying £36,529.65 (£18,264.83 pro-rata) per annum. The London-based role will also attract a £3033.56 (£1516.78 pro-rata) London Allowance per annum.

Whilst the successful candidates will be able to work a blended approach of home and office-working when business needs allow, they will be required to attend our clinic based location to deliver clinics as well as travel regularly to our other locations as business demand requires. Travel and accommodation will be provided by BTP, when required.

This is a development role, therefore, whilst we will require successful candidates to be a Nurse registered with the Nursing And Midwifery Council, Occupational Health experience is not essential as we will provide you with the relevant training to enable you to effectively and successfully carry out your role. Following a suitable period of experience, there will be opportunities to undertake formal Occupational Health training to become a qualified Occupational Health practitioner.

As Occupational Health Practice Nurse, you will be required to:

  • Undertake efficient and timely medical assessments (face-to-face clinics, paper and remote assessments) and provide clear and concise explanation/instruction to participants in order to establish fitness for work for operational Officers and police staff.
  • Provide opinion for fitness for work and any necessary recommendations using evidence-based knowledge and taking into consideration BTP local procedure and processes, statutory health surveillance, drug and alcohol policy, and medical standards.
  • With appropriate supervision, support Occupational Health Advisors (OHAs) with other Occupational Health service activity and on occasion deputise for OHAs at internal meetings, providing advice and guidance to line managers and employees on Occupational Health matters and processes, reporting back to the OHA as needed and for further input.
  • Maintain knowledge of medical processes, policing activities and related topics to ensure high quality service at all times.

The successful Occupational Health Practice Nurse will be required to evidence the following:

  • Registered Nurse with Nursing and Midwifery Council.
  • A minimum of 2 years post graduate experience in a clinical setting undertaking some record keeping and medical screening tasks.
  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding of Occupational Health, health surveillance and fitness for work assessments.
  • Ability to work calmly, accurately and sensitively under pressure.
  • Ability to work on own initiative following appropriate processes and procedures.
