British Transport Police (BTP) are looking to recruit a Senior Commercial Manager on a permanent contract to join our Commercial and Procurement Team based in either London or Birmingham. BTP are however willing to consider other suitable locations in discussions with the successful candidate. This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Senior Manager within Commercial and/or Procurement to work for a large, geographically dispersed organisation and support the running of a national Police Force.

The starting salary for this role is £50,617.58 per annum plus £7000 Market Supplement and £2,700.10 London Allowance (if applicable).

BTP is the national police force for the rail network throughout Great Britain, including London Underground, across which we ensure the safety and security of nearly 3 billion passenger journeys and over 100 million tons of freight every year. The world in which we work is fast-paced, operationally and commercially demanding, and constantly changing. As Senior Commercial Manager you will lead the delivery of high quality commercial services and ensure the effective and efficient implementation of commercial procurement programmes specifying operational plans and improving supplier performance. 


As Senior Commercial Manager you will be required to:

  • Participate in the identification, development, maintenance, communication and execution of procurement strategies, processes, policies and procedures
  • Lead complex contract negotiations demonstrating commercial acumen 
  • Ensure compliance with procurement law and Cabinet Office best practice
  • Task manage other team members and work in partnership with colleagues
  • Undertake project work as required and assigned
  • Support the team through process and organisational change 
  • Representing the Commercial and Procurement team more widely across the organisation

The successful Senior Commercial Manager will be required to evidence the following skills:

  • A fully qualified member of MCIPS or on track to achieving this within 12 months
  • Extensive and proven experience in a senior position within Procurement, Commercial or Contract Management function 
  • Experience in Strategic Procurement 
  • Significant experience in risk mitigation through clear understanding of procurement law
  • Proven ability to deliver cash savings through application of commercial best practice
  • Ability to challenge and influence stakeholders
  • Awareness of the challenges facing the police service and public sector and the role that procurement can play in this

BTP has undertaken a review of Police Staff pensions and as a result of this the Police Staff pension will be changing. The current police staff pension is a Defined Benefit scheme which is administered by the Railways Pension scheme. The new pension scheme which is launching is a Defined Contribution scheme which is administered by Royal London. The new pension scheme is awaiting formal approval and an introductory date is not finalised.
