Communications Officer - Force Control Room London

British Transport Police are recruiting Communications Officers to work in our Force Control Room, London.

As a Communications Officer with BTP you will be expected to provide call handling and radio dispatch for the British Transport Police and manage the police response to incidents ensuring that public and officer safety is maintained at all times.

Communications Officers are required on a permanent contract paying up to £33,964.43  depending on experience (inclusive of London allowance & shift allowance) with British Transport Police (BTP) based in our Force Control Room in Central London.

BTP is the national police Force for Britain’s rail network. Every day we ensure the safety and security of over six million passengers and railway staff throughout England, Scotland and Wales. As a Communications Officer you will be working in a safety critical role and you will be required to:

• Provide call handling and radio dispatch for the British Transport Police and manage the police response to incidents
• Record information accurately while assessing the information to decide on the appropriate level of response
• Demonstrate the ability to work as part of a team while meeting tight deadlines.
• Cover a 24/7 365 days a year rota consisting of a mix of early, late and night shifts (example rota attached to advert)

 The successful Communications Officers will be required to evidence the following skills:

• Excellent communication skills.
• Manage situations in a calm and assertive manner.
• Utilise different communication methods (e.g. telephone, radio, email)
• High standard of IT skills with the ability to learn new packages.

The recruitment process for this role is the successful completion of online testing and then an interview and assessment exercise on a future date. The interviews will take place over June/July.

Candidates internal to BTP must confirm that they are not subject to formal action plans for sickness/complaints/discipline or poor performance, that all mandatory training courses have been attended and are in ticket/up to date, that a ‘Competent’ rating, or above, was achieved on the last reporting year PDR and they have completed their tenure period (6 months) for current substantive posting.

BTP has undertaken a review of Police Staff pensions and as a result of this the Police Staff pension will be changing. The current police staff pension is a Defined Benefit scheme which is administered by the Railways Pension scheme. The new pension scheme which is launching is a Defined Contribution scheme which is administered by Royal London. The new pension scheme is awaiting formal approval and an introductory date is not finalised.
