A National Exercise and Testing Officer is required on a Permanent contract paying £25,964.30 per annum plus £2,520 London Allowance with British Transport Police (BTP) based in our Central-London Specialist Operations (N7). 

BTP is the national police Force for Britain’s rail network. Every day we ensure the safety and security of over six million passengers and railway staff throughout England, Scotland and Wales. As a National Exercise and Testing Officer with BTP, you will assist with the design and delivery of an ongoing programme of counter-terrorism exercises and testing, involving participation with various areas of the organisation and also the wider rail industry and other emergency services.   

Please note that this role will include national travel as part of the core duties, with overnight stays sometimes necessary. 

As a National Exercise and Testing Officer you will be required to:

  • Design, prepare, evaluate and facilitate the delivery of tests and exercises of current Counter Terrorism policies and procedures against the priorities identified in the 2016 CT Strategic Risk Assessment.
  • Liaise and communicate on a regular basis with all levels of command throughout the testing life cycle, as well as with Network Rail, Train operating Companies, and other external agencies.
  • Ensure all exercises and tests are conducted in accordance with Joint Operating Principles for the Emergency Services (JESIP).
  • Support planning of Regional and National CT exercises delivered by other agencies.
  • Prepare and co-ordinate associated documentation for testing exercises and ensure there is consistency in the paperwork produced by the department.
  • Facilitate and lead with exercising and tests of the specialist BTP response, including Force and Divisional Mobilisation plans, 'Go Critical' plans, and post-incident procedures.
  • Provide advice and guidance in relation to CT exercises to ensure that force policies and procedures are adhered to.
  • To liaise with external agencies as required (e.g. CT specialists and other Category One responders) on behalf of the team Sergeant and Inspector.
  • Maintain close liaison with local teams to ensure that resources are allocated as appropriate and that communication with the officers is clear regarding their duties.
  • Provide real-time support following any major incident as necessary.

The successful National Exercise and Testing Officer will be required to evidence the following skills/experience:

  • Good knowledge of Counter Terrorism Policies and Procedures
  • Good knowledge of Operational Policing
  • Experience within Counter Terrorism as a specialism
  • Qualified in (or working towards) a formal training qualification (ie: PTLLS)
  • High degree of personal organisation and attention to detail
  • Proven ability to work under pressure to meet challenging deadlines
  • Comfortable presenting to large groups and to various levels of the organisation
