A Digital Forensics Unit Technical Manager is required for a permanent role paying £34,274.06 per annum, plus £2700.10 London Allowance per annum, plus £3957.00 market supplement, with British Transport Police (BTP) based at Ebury Bridge, London. 

This role offers a blended approach of agile and office based working. It is likely that the post holder will be required to work from Ebury Bridge, London a couple of times a week, but this will vary dependent on business need.  

BTP is the national police Force for the rail network throughout Great Britain, including London Underground, across which we ensure the safety and security of nearly 3 billion passenger journeys and over 100 million tons of freight every year. The world in which we work is fast-paced, operationally and commercially demanding, and constantly changing. As Technical Manager with BTP you will deliver an effective, efficient and high-quality digital service to the British Transport Police, the community and the Criminal Justice System through the management and development of staff, methods, processes and continued ISO17020 and 17025 accreditation. This role covers all technical aspects and quality of laboratory activities for digital forensics, including digital media, mobile devices, electronic storage devices, mobile device kiosks and other frontline tools as well as other areas brought into scope by the Forensic Science Regulator.

As Technical Manager you will be required to:

  • Deliver and maintain ISO17020 and 17025 accreditation across the Cyber Crime Unit (CCU) and other frontline digital forensic hubs in line with local, regional and national legislation and policies.
  • Establish, review, maintain and develop existing and new analytical procedures for digital forensics and communicate any changes to staff.
  • Develop and maintain validation and test/calibration processes to ensure that all hardware, software and methods used in the CCU and the frontline hubs are fit for purpose.
  • Develop, maintain and ensure compliance with Quality Management System (QMS) including adherence to Quality Procedures (QP), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions (WIs).
  • Lead on technical matters in relation to the QMS for all technical aspects of digital forensic activity within the British Transport Police.
  • Deliver continuous improvement of CCU and frontline digital forensic performance including the completion and corrective action from internal audits, problem solving, investigation of anomalies including root cause analysis for findings and trend analysis. 

Further information about this vacancy can be found in the attached job description. The successful Technical Manager will be required to evidence the following skills:

  • Educated to degree level in Computer Forensics and/or Computer Science, or equivalent experience in digital forensics.
  • Successful completion of relevant digital forensics courses such as XWays, Axiom and/or mobile device software such as MSAB XRY, Cellebrite or Oxygen.
  • Sound working knowledge and understanding of BS EN ISO/IEC 17025 / 17020, ILAC G19 Modules in a Forensic Science Process and Forensic Science Regulators Code of Practice and Conduct.
  • A confident communicator in both verbal and written skills including report-writing with a personable, professional manner and the ability to interact and relate to all levels of staff.
  • Ability to continually and effectively absorb technical information, evaluate, and report on results to management.

BTP has undertaken a review of Police Staff pensions and as a result of this the Police Staff pension will be changing. The current police staff pension is a Defined Benefit scheme which is administered by the Railways Pension scheme. The new pension scheme which is launching is a Defined Contribution scheme which is administered by Royal London. The new pension scheme is awaiting formal approval and an introductory date is not finalised.
