A Finger Print Expert is required on a permanent contract role paying from £38,279.00 to £44,542.42 per annum (inclusive of London allowance, specialist allowance and 10% on call allowance) with British Transport Police (BTP) based in London.

CV's from partially trained Fingerprint Officers, on a salary scale commensurate with experience and competence will be considers.

BTP is the national police Force for the rail network throughout Great Britain, including London Underground, across which we ensure the safety and security of nearly 3 billion passenger journeys and over 100 million tons of freight every year. As a Finger Print Expert you will provide British Transport Police with an accurate Fingerprint Identification Service that supports the bringing to justice of those that commit crime on the Railway Networks of England, Scotland and Wales.

Working in a small and dynamic team you will process cases and prepare and present evidence for all crime types and incidents encountered within Home Office forces, as well as those particular to the railways.

You will experience the unique challenges that railway based incidents present, especially within the context of a National Force.

You will have the opportunity to become involved with International Disaster Victim Identification.

The BTP Fingerprint Bureau has recently been recommended for ISO 17025 Accreditation and you will be fully involved in further developing processes and systems to help maintain compliance. You will have the opportunity to be involved in other areas such as auditing and training.'


As a Finger Print Expert you will be required to:

•Analyse and compare finger and palm print marks (manually and via the National Fingerprint Database, Ident 1) retrieved from crime scenes and developed by means of chemical treatments, and make decisions to determine identification.

•Independently examine and verify the comparisons and decisions of other examiners.

•Interrogate computerized systems to gather intelligence in order to maximise opportunities to establish the identity of crime scene marks.

The successful Finger Print Expert will be required to evidence the following skills:

•Successfully completed the 3-5 year accredited National Fingerprint Training programme, including the Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced Fingerprint Courses and related evidential portfolios and work based training elements, although partially trained candidates will be considered.

•Excellent organisational, administrative and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate both orally and in written report form with people at all levels.

•Ability to effectively represent the Force on matters pertaining to Fingerprint Identification as an Expert Witness in judicial and coronial courts.
