British Transport Police (BTP) are recruiting a Health and Safety Advisor on a full time, permanent contract to be based in either Manchester or Leeds; the salary for this role is £33,438.11 per annum. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced H&S professional to utilise their skills in a unique policing environment for a national  Police Force. Please be advised the successful candidate will be required to travel to BTP locations across the UK; rail travel will be provided for travel to locations during working hours.


BTP is the national police Force for the rail network throughout Great Britain, including London Underground, across which we ensure the safety and security of nearly 3 billion passenger journeys and over 100 million tons of freight every year. The world in which we work is fast-paced, operationally and commercially demanding, and constantly changing.


As Health & Safety Advisor with BTP you will provide and be a first point of contact for any professional Health, Safety and Fire Advice and guidance to mitigate risk and reduce incidents. You will work closely with BTP employee's operationally and non-operationally as well as other key stakeholders to ensure your recommendations are implemented and legally compliant with Health, Safety and Fire regulations. If incidents do occur you will investigate as required along with regulatory authority oversight (ORR, HSE and RAIB) to identify what happened, why and lessons learned.

As Health & Safety Advisor you will be required to:

  • Provide H&S advice to relevant Division/departments in accordance with the H&S Strategy and legal compliance
  • Conduct H&S audits with contractors on site.
  • Undertake and review fire risk assessment in line with PAS79 across a variety of BTP premises
  • Work closely with other departments/ teams to ensure that issued equipment, estates and risk assessment is fit for purpose
  • Educate and hold to account managers on conducting risk assessments for operational events
  • Conduct DSE assessments; offering advice tailored to individual requirements
  • Attend major incidents as required to provide on-site health and safety support and advice
  • Undertake accident investigations or advise managers on how to conduct them
  • Own and update the policies for H&S including: DSE workstation, Expectant Mothers, Return to Work, Stress
  • Liaise with the legal team regarding personal injury claims or when dealing with external bodies such as Solicitors progressing claims against BTP
  • Review and advise on risk assessments for new buildings, premises and refurbishments
  • Maintain up to date, accurate H&S records in compliance with GDPR record keeping and information management requirements
  • Produce H&S reports as required

The successful candidate will be required to evidence the following skills:


  • A recognised health and safety professional qualification (minimum NEBOSH certificate or equivalent in Occupational Health and Safety)
  • Technical member of IOSH
  • An approved, recognised certificate in Fire Safety and Fire Risk Assessments
  • A successful track record as a H&S professional
  • Audit and inspection experience
  • Experience in investigating accidents
  • Good knowledge of Health, Safety and Fire legislation across England, Wales and Scotland and its practical application within a public service environment
