British Transport Police (BTP) are recruiting a HR Advisor on a Fixed Term Contract ending 1st March 2021 to join our HR delivery team in Birmingham; the starting salary for this role is £33,438.11 per annum. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced HR professional to utilise their skills in a unique policing environment for a national police Force. Please be advised the successful candidate will be required to travel to BTP locations across the UK; rail travel will be provided for travel to locations during working hours.


BTP is the national police Force for the rail network throughout Great Britain, including London Underground, across which we ensure the safety and security of nearly 3 billion passenger journeys and over 100 million tons of freight every year. The world in which we work is fast-paced, operationally and commercially demanding, and constantly changing. As HR Advisor for BTP you will be required to provide advice, guidance and practical support across a full range of HR related issues. You will deliver a case load of HR work related to sickness, ET’s disputes, discipline, performance management, workforce planning, recruitment, employee relations, diversity, organisational development and change etc.. within BTP’s HR guidelines, policies, procedures and relevant legislative requirements.

As HR Advisor you will be required to:


  • Provide generalist HR Support and an advisory service to all BTP employee's
  • Personally deliver on a case load of general cases/issues
  • Be first point of contact for all support groups, the Police Federation and TSSA (staff union) in dealing with HR issues
  • Develop and deliver an operationally alligned and intelligence based workforce plan
  • Work on and deliver HR project work when required
  • Attend and contribute to HR meetings and operational meetings

Due to the nature of the role we are looking for an individual who has handled complex case management before in an advisory rather than transactional setting.

We are looking for applicants who have the following skills and experience:


  • CIPD qualified and working towards MCIPD or equivalent experience
  • A successful track record in providing HR generalist work in a large, multi-disciplined operational organisation
  • Experience of supporting the delivery of successful organisational, managerial and culture change
  • Professional, persuasive and influential
  • Ability to withstand pressure and strong negotiation skills
  • Able to command the confidence of senior operational managers, employees, trade unions, external partners and other stakeholders.
