A Digital Forensic Unit (DFU) Investigator is required to join the County Lines Team for a 12 month FTC role paying up to £27,824.32 per annum, plus £2700 London Allowance per annum, plus an additional £3,957.00 Market Supplement per annum, with the British Transport Police (BTP) based in London. 

BTP is the national police Force for the rail network throughout Great Britain, including London Underground, across which we ensure the safety and security of nearly 3 billion passenger journeys and over 100 million tons of freight every year. The world in which we work is fast-paced, operationally and commercially demanding, and constantly changing. As Digital Forensic Unit (DFU) Investigator with BTP you will provide effective forensic expertise that is professional, readily accessible, and cost effective in order to support the investigative process from initial case acceptance to conclusion.

As Digital Forensic Unit (DFU) Investigator you will be required to:

  • Conduct digital forensic examinations within the confines of ISO 17025 and the Forensic Science Regulator's Codes of Practice (or equivalent), ensuring continuing compliance and competence.
  • Contribute towards the continuous improvement of standards within the department under ISO 17025.
  • Conduct laboratory based acquisitions, extractions and analysis of mobile devices and/or digital media to support investigations.
  • Ensure integrity and continuity of items by correct exhibit handling, storage, documentation and updating of the case management system.
  • Be competent and utilise a range of hardware and software to conduct acquisitions and subsequently produce evidential reports from mobile devices and digital media.
  • Evaluate and interpret the results of investigations and give evidence that is unbiased, accurate and based on established principles.
  • Provide evidential statements and attend court to present evidence of work undertaken when required.
  • Work co-operatively with team members and colleagues, contributing constructively.
  • Support frontline digital forensic practitioners, and/or community volunteers or police specials who may be attached to the unit.
  • Maintain personal responsibility for gathering, recording, storing, accessing and sharing of information in compliance with policy, procedures and legislation.
  • Achieve and maintain competency in all areas of the role in accordance with ISO 17025.

 Further information about this vacancy can be found in the attached job description. The successful Digital Forensic Unit (DFU) Investigator will be required to evidence the following skills:

  • Experience of working in a digital environment.
  • An aptitude for (and keenness to develop) skills in the technical elements of mobile devices and/or digital media
  • Attention to detail with a methodical approach to problem solving.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with persons at all levels of technical knowledge both within and outside the organisation.
  • Proven ability to work in the small close-knit team.
  • Competent in the use of IT systems including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

The successful candidate will be required to pass Security Vetting at SC level.
