British Transport Police (BTP) is the national police force for Britain's rail network. Every day we ensure the safety and security of over six million passengers and railway staff throughout England, Scotland and Wales.

We are looking to recruit and train a number of Designated Detention Officers (DDO's) to be based from our Inner London Custody Suites, on a Permanent basis. The salary for this position is £19,918.61 plus £2,470 London allowance and 20% Shift Allowance (there is a shift pattern covering 24/7 and 365 days).

Designated Detention Officers (DDO’s) assist with the running and management of the custody suite. They play an increasingly important part in the way custody suites are run. This is a challenging yet rewarding position that can also at times be physically demanding. DDO’s ensure that staff and detainees are kept safe and secure and provide a professional custody service to a range of stakeholders.

As a DDO you will be required to:

  • Under the direction of the Custody Sergeant, manage the arrival of detainees at the custody suite.
  • Conduct risk assessments.
  • Conduct Prisoner searches, take fingerprints, photographs and DNA samples using reasonable force when necessary and appropriate.
  • Conduct cell visits to ensure the safety of detainees and ensure that cells are in good working order, clean and free from defects.

Please see the job description for further information.

If you are interested in applying to this DDO role then please do not delay as interviews will be held as soon as appropriate candidates are highlighted. In return for your experience, we can offer you:

  • Salary up to £26,397.33per annum (inclusive of London allowance and 20% shift allowance)
  • 28 days annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Final salary pension
  • Various salary sacrifice schemes (cycle to work/childcare) and retail discounts

We want our organisation to be as diverse as the community it serves so we welcome applicants from all sections of the community. You must have the right to remain and work in the UK and you must tell us about any previous convictions or cautions including any deemed as 'spent'. These will not necessarily exclude you from employment but they must be declared at the point of application.

Candidates internal to BTP must confirm that they are not subject to formal action plans for sickness/complaints/discipline or poor performance, that all mandatory training courses have been attended and are in ticket/up to date, that a ‘Competent’ rating, or above, was achieved on the last reporting year PDR and they have completed their tenure period (12 months) for current substantive posting.

This opportunity is closed to applications.
