Student Officer - Application and Assessment Centre Workshop

We want our workforce to represent the community we serve. Fewer than one in ten Police Officers in the UK identify as being from a black or minority ethnic (BME) background and only a third of Officers are women. We think we can do better than this and have already made great progress towards achieving a more representative workforce. British Transport Police has a proud history of working hard to improve upon this picture and our recent intakes of new Police Officers have been some of the most diverse we’ve ever seen; in fact BTP is the 4th most representative force for BME Officers. This is not an insignificant achievement but neither is it ‘job done’ for better diversity.

Diversity matters. Diversity helps us to build bridges between the police and groups who traditionally feel disconnected from us. This speaks to the public’s trust and confidence in the police; it speaks to the ability for a young black male to feel that we will treat him fairly and proportionately, or for a woman to feel confident reporting a sexual assault to us. These are serious issues and we do not shy away from addressing them and nor should we. Despite that seriousness, the action we take is actually quite subtle and a key step we have taken is to run application and assessment centre workshops that have one simple aim: to give those who traditionally feel excluded from a career in policing the confidence that there is a place for them at British Transport Police.

What does the workshop consist of?

Most importantly, the workshop is a chance to meet operational Police Officers and ask questions about the reality of becoming a PC

  • The workshop will give you an overall understanding of the recruitment process
  • You will understand what  is required in your application form and how best to prepare for the assessment centre
  • Ultimately, the workshop will alleviate any concerns about going through the recruitment process and becoming a Police Officer

When is the workshop taking place?

Location: Force Headquarters, 25 Camden Road, London, NW1 9LN

  • Date: Saturday 12th January 2019
  • Time: 12:00pm to 15:00pm.

Spaces are limited and you must have received communication from the recruitment team confirming your place on the workshop in order to attend. For security reasons, we will refuse entry to any candidates who attend without a confirmed place on the workshop. In line with our Positive Action initiatives we will initially only offer places on this workshop to women and black and minority ethnic candidates.

Can’t attend?

If you can’t attend, or the workshop is full, then don’t worry. It is not a requirement to have attended a workshop in order to apply. However anyone, whoever they are, who is interested in becoming a Police Officer and who has a question is always more than welcome to get in touch with us to find out what they need to know. If you have any queries about the workshop or the recruitment and assessment process please email recruitmentteam@btp.pnn.police.uk
