British Transport Police (BTP) are currently recruiting for a Health & Safety Advisor for a permanent contract paying £39,877.88 per annum to be based at one of the following BTP locations: Cardiff, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow.

BTP are currently championing a flexible approach to working and will be supportive of a range of out-based and blended approach of home and office-based working, however, there will be an expectation for the successful candidate to travel to BTP locations once or twice a week; rail travel will be provided for travel to locations during working hours.

BTP is the national police force for the rail network throughout Great Britain, including London Underground, across which we ensure the safety and security of nearly 3 billion passenger journeys and over 100 million tons of freight every year. The world in which we work is fast-paced, operationally and commercially demanding, and constantly changing. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Health & Safety professional to utilise their skills in a unique policing environment.

As Health & Safety Advisor with BTP, you will provide and be a first point of contact for any professional Health, Safety and Fire Advice and guidance to mitigate risk and reduce incidents. You will work closely with BTP employee's operationally and non-operationally as well as other key stakeholders to ensure your recommendations are implemented and legally compliant with Health, Safety and Fire regulations. If incidents do occur, you will investigate as required along with regulatory authority oversight (ORR, HSE and RAIB) to identify what happened, why and lessons learned.

As Health & Safety Advisor, you will be required to:

  • Provide professional Health, Safety and Fire advice to relevant division/departments in accordance with legislation and BTP’s Health & Safety Strategy.
  • Conduct Health & Safety inspections across a variety of BTP premises.
  • Undertake and review fire risk assessments in line with PAS79 across a variety of BTP premises.
  • Influence internal stakeholders in a supportive and coaching style to encourage ownership of risk.
  • Support our people by undertaking DSE assessments, Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPS) and Personal Safety Plans (PSP); offering advice tailored to individual requirements.
  • Attend major incidents as required to provide on-site health and safety support and advice.
  • Undertake root cause analysis investigations, present findings to committees and advise our leaders on risk controls and mitigation.
  • Take ownership of health and safety projects, supporting BTP’s aspirations to continuously in all areas of health and safety management.
  • Present H&S performance data, influence decisions and present reports to senior leaders.
  • Advise on risk assessment management and be a proactive ambassador for health and safety management.
  • Develop and maintain own CPD and stay up to date with legislation and best practice.
  • Maintain an up to date, accurate Health & Safety records in compliance with GDPR record keeping and information management requirements.

The successful Health & Safety Advisor will be required to evidence the following skills:

  • A recognised health and safety professional qualification (minimum NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent in Occupational Health And Safety).
  • Technical member of IOSH (TechIOSH).
  • A successful track record of consistent achievement as a H&S professional in a large multi-disciplined operational organisation with a geographically dispersed community of employees.
  • Experience in investigating accidents, including interviewing staff at all levels, and collecting evidence in accordance with professional standards.
  • Audit and inspection experience.

BTP has undertaken a review of Police Staff pensions and as a result of this the Police Staff pension will be changing. The current police staff pension is a Defined Benefit scheme which is administered by the Railways Pension scheme. The new pension scheme which is launching is a Defined Contribution scheme which is administered by Royal London. The new pension scheme is awaiting formal approval and an introductory date is not finalised.
