Experienced Special Constable Opportunities

Role Overview

Special Constables assist BTP in providing an increased uniform presence for the rail network. They are expected to serve on a regular basis and commit at least sixteen hours per month, usually broken into eight hour shifts. Although Specials aren’t paid, they are bestowed with the same powers as regular Police Constables and carry out a varied role which could include foot and vehicle patrols, assisting at incidents, helping passengers, policing events or simply acting as a reassurance to the travelling public.

Opportunities now exist for experienced serving Special Constables to transfer into the BTP and work with our existing Special and Regular Constables in all of our force areas. Transferees will be asked to attend a specially designed set of training to bring them up to date on the BTP specific policing issues and certify in personal protection and track safety. BTP is able to offer an exciting new challenge for experienced Special Constables, working in a specialist environment. BTP Special Constables tend to work closely with Regular Constables in small team and gain from specialist training and wide variety in deployment types and location.

Eligibility

To apply you MUST meet the following criteria:

• Achieved Independent Patrol Status
• Received First Aid Training
• Free from any convictions/cautions/reprimands and penalty notices (other then driving penalty notices) even if you are serving as a Special Constable at the moment with another force.
• Thoroughly grounded in the operational aspects of police work
• Free from any ongoing investigation in your current force
• Have completed your minimum required annual hours and live in or near the BTP policing area you wish to transfer to
