British Transport Police (BTP) are recruiting for a Visual Identification and Briefing (VIB) Researcher on a Permanent, full time contract. The role is paying £29,076.18 per annum, plus £3,033.56 London allowance per annum and will be based in BTP Albany House, London.

BTP is the national police Force for the rail network throughout Great Britain, including London Underground, across which we ensure the safety and security of nearly 3 billion passenger journeys and over 100 million tons of freight every year. The world in which we work is fast-paced, operationally and commercially demanding, and constantly changing. Within the Visual Identification and Briefing team (VIB) you will specialise in using various Policing systems to identify suspects who are captured on CCTV imagery committing high harm offences and completing subsequent research packages to aid investigations. 

As VIB Researcher you will be required to:

  • To manage a workload of cases where suspect CCTV images are available process through various police systems to seek to identify them and/or link that suspect to further offences.
  • To  prepare match reports and research summaries for identified suspects to accurately inform decision making in live investigations.
  • To create and manage briefing material within the Force briefing system

You will also provide resilience for the wider intelligence command as general intelligence researcher where required. As a VIB Researcher you will be required to:

  • To evaluate, sanitise and validate all intelligence reports received by BTP, and create nominal records and other required entities, as outlined in current Force guidance and in line with processes defined within MOPI and NIM.
  • Through evaluation and research, identify intelligence gaps and emerging issues and ensure that these are flagged appropriately for development.
  • Prepare and deliver research summaries and findings, such as presentations and reports, to clearly and accurately inform decision making and/or facilitate analysis.
  • Exercise use of the National Intelligence Model (NIM) and maintain knowledge of relevant legislation (for example, Investigatory Powers Act, Data Protection Act, Management of Police Information). Adhere to all legal frameworks, key working principles, policies and guidance relevant to the role.

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant discipline or equivalent qualification or work experience.
  • Experience of communicating effectively and of undertaking research of a qualitative and quantitative nature.
  • Ability to research and assimilate large volumes of data and prepare and produce complex research-based reports
  • Understanding of relevant legislation and policies appropriate to the role and their use (for example: Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act, General Data Protection Regulation, Management of Police Information)
