British Transport Police (BTP) are recruiting for X3 Social Media Engagement Officers on a Permanent Contract. The role is paying £32,757.33 per annum and will be based either at Birmingham or London. London Based candidates will receive London Allowance £3,033.56 per annum.

BTP is the national police Force for the rail network throughout Great Britain, including London Underground, across which we ensure the safety and security of nearly 3 billion passenger journeys and over 100 million tons of freight every year. The world in which we work is fast paced, operationally and commercially demanding, and constantly changing. The social media engagement officers provide a dedicated social media monitoring service to BTP/BTPA, analysing social media activity and often acting as a first responder to enquiries or posts. They will monitor activity and make decisions whether to respond personally or whether to escalate matters that need a specialist media relations or operational input, paying particular attention for issues of vulnerability, criminality, or risks to public confidence.

As a Social Media Engagement Officer, you will be required to:

  • Using specialist software to monitor all social media platforms to identify posts and content that are of interest to the force or that need a force response.
  • Manipulating the use of social media monitoring software to assist with the monitoring of public sentiment or perception to external activities / incidents, such as the release of government reports or public policy changes.
  • Responding to social media posts and public comments left across the force social media accounts where appropriate, using information provided by the wider department on current key messages and campaign activity. Direct members of the public to relevant reporting methods if they are trying to report a crime via social media.
  • Recognising and highlighting potential social media risks or issues and making decisions to escalate social media content where it poses a vulnerability, criminality, or reputational risk.
  • Support the wider department and force with the dissemination of key messaging across social media during incidents, crises or high-profile issues attracting public and media interest.

  • Able to work on own initiative and use sound judgement to make quick decisions.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret social media data.
  • Able to produce reports and actionable insights for colleagues.
  • The ability to identify risks to the force – such as trending social media content – and ensure it is being handled and raised with the appropriate people.
  • Excellent written and digital communication skills and able to deal with the public courteously whilst managing expectations.
  • The ability to work unsupervised and use own initiative to solve problems.
