Police Driving Instructor

A Police Driving Instructor is required for a permanent role paying a starting salary of £34,139.86 per annum with the British Transport Police (BTP). This role predominately involves remote, flexible working, however, you will be required to travel to any one of the following main BTP Hubs as and when required for training and other business requirements; Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds or Cardiff. Other base locations within the Midlands and Pennines will be considered and can be discussed with candidates.

BTP is the national police force for the rail network throughout Great Britain, including London Underground, across which we ensure the safety and security of nearly 3 billion passenger journeys and over 100 million tons of freight every year. The world in which we work is fast-paced, operationally and commercially demanding, and constantly changing. As Police Driving Instructor with BTP, you will plan, design, and deliver a range of driving courses to National Standards for Police Driving, Specialist Driver Training Courses and Instructors, ensuring compliance with legislation, current College of Policing Authorised Professional Practice and NPCC guidelines and BTP Policy.

As Police Driving Instructor, you will be required to:

  • Plan, design and deliver driver training to operational police officers and police staff within the Force to comply with National Police Driving Standards in compliance with College of Policing APP, NPCC guidance and legislation.
  • Conduct risk assessments and training plans to ensure the safety of all instructors, course participants, the public and the safety of vehicles during instruction and delivery of all training courses.
  • Conduct DriverMetrics Assessments with drivers prior to any initial training, refresher training or post collision assessment to identify personal risk factors and areas for development, to improve safety.
  • Maintain all driver training vehicles ensuring that they are kept in excellent condition, setting an example to students as to how they are expected to maintain vehicles in their care.
  • Provide refresher driver training, focusing on safe driving and Continued Professional Development.

The successful Police Driving Instructor will be required to evidence the following:

  • A recognised College of Policing Driving Instructors Qualification at Standard and Advanced levels.
  • Authorised Driving Instructor (or be willing to work towards this)
  • Relevant training/teaching experience and have achieved either a level 3 or 4 or in teaching or be willing to work towards this
  • Currently holds or is willing to obtain assessor and verifier qualifications.
  • Ability to adopt a range of leadership styles.
  • Commitment to Continued Professional Development.

BTP has undertaken a review of Police Staff pensions and as a result of this the Police Staff pension will be changing. The current police staff pension is a Defined Benefit scheme which is administered by the Railways Pension scheme. The new pension scheme which is launching is a Defined Contribution scheme which is administered by Royal London. The new pension scheme is awaiting formal approval and an introductory date is not finalised.
