BTP are recruiting PCSOs (Police Community Support Officer) - Join us and make a difference!

Our job (and if you chose to apply, yours too) is to protect and serve the railway environment and its community, keeping levels of disruption, crime and the fear of crime as low as possible and our police community support officers (PCSOs) are vital to achieving this.

Neighbourhood policing is as important to BTP as it is to other forces; it’s simply that our neighbourhood looks different to your local town. It is more transient and will pose just as many challenges. You will have the same responsibilities of Home Office PCSOs but focused within a railway environment which will also allow you to enforce BTP Byelaws.

No two days will be the same as you help protect and reassure the passengers, railway staff and retailers within the BTP Community. As well as conducting visible patrols at stations, you’ll confidently deal with a number of tasks, including crowd control; dealing with security threats; undertaking minor crime investigation; working with your community to build and maintain relationships and partnerships, and providing support and assistance to PC’s.

You’ll need to be resilient with a real flair for customer service. You’ll have a passion for engaging with the community and forging strong links with our partner organisations. PCSOs will also need to be prepared to work shifts, including weekends and bank holidays to support this work. All in all, this is an incredibly rewarding job!

Salary:

Outer London

Receive a starting salary of £24,391.58

Plus you will further receive up to 20% shift allowance of £4,878.316, however some shift patterns may attract different allowance rates.

In return for your commitment you will:

  • Receive 28 days holiday (rising to 30 days with service)
  • Receive travel benefits (dependent on location)
  • Have the opportunity of internal progression to become a Police Officer.
  • Have a rewarding career where no two days are ever the same
  • Be constantly challenged and always learning; supported by our in-house talent & development teams.
  • Be valued for your contribution to your community
  • Have access to employee assistance programmes, dedicated wellbeing hub and coaches & mentors from across the force.
  • Have excellent pay progression, a pension scheme and benefits package

We are looking for PCSOs in the following areas;

Reading, Bangor, Oxford, Rhyl, Cardiff, Chester, Swansea, Newport, Shrewsbury, Pontypridd, Swindon and Derby.

For Welsh posting locations the ability to speak Welsh is desirable but not an essential skill in the selection process.

We want our organisation to be as diverse as the community it serves and welcome applications from everyone.  Please be assured that all applications will be judged on their individual merit and no other factors. We are committed to improving inclusivity, accessibility and employment opportunities throughout our organisation. We welcome applicants to share any specific needs or requirements with us throughout both the recruitment process and in the workplace. Please let us know if there are any adjustments you require, and we will be able to discuss this with you in further detail.

Application process and eligibility:

Applying is easy; simply click on ‘Apply’ at the bottom left of this page and you will be taken through the process.  All applications must be completed online via this method. You need to answer all the questions asked as, unfortunately, if any parts are unanswered your application will sadly be declined from the process.

We do need to let you know that you will not be eligible to apply if:

  • You have been unsuccessful following a BTP PCSO interview in the last 6 months.
  • You have been unsuccessful following BTP vetting checks within the last 12 months.
  • You have ever received a custodial sentence (other cautions, convictions and involvement with the police must be declared but are not necessarily a bar to employment).
  • You have previously been dismissed from another force.
  • You have been declared bankrupt, have a CCJ or an un-managed IVA.
  • You have tattoos of any kind on your face or neck.

For further information on our eligibility criteria, please have a read through the attached recruitment pack as it contains lots of useful information for you.

We won’t be able to accept applications after this time for any reason, including technical errors.  To avoid disappointment, we encourage you to submit your application prior to this deadline. Following your application being completed and submitted, our team will then let you know if you have passed or failed the application form stage of the process via email and the next stages.

Pension:

BTP has undertaken a review of Police Staff pensions and the Police Staff pension will be changing. The current police staff pension is a Defined Benefit scheme which is administered by the Railways Pension scheme. The new pension scheme (soon to be launched) is a Defined Contribution scheme which is administered by Royal London. The new pension scheme is awaiting formal approval and an introductory date is not finalised. The earliest this will be is October 2023.  If you have a query, please do contact the recruitment team.
